University District
The University District is a perfect college town, where residential streets are within walking distance of pizza parlors and coffee shops. Many people are drawn to its close-set houses and the neighborhood has a distinct community feel. The community is very progressive, but the residents have protected the historic nature of the area by securing zoning laws that restrict certain types of development; in fact, a large piece of the neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many homeowners are renovating the old homes, ensuring that the historic neighborhood retains its classic architecture and character. And many of the residents do not use cars, relying instead on bicycles, buses and the light rail system.
